Fall Activities in Central PA
Fall is here! And while your pumpkin spice lattes will be available throughout the season, some of the biggest fall festivals and events here in Central PA will only be around for a limited time. What should you see? Here are our six picks:
- Central Pennsylvania Oktoberfest
This 21-and-older event is hosted at the Penn National Race Course in coordination with the Hershey Harrisburg Craft Beer Country. Sample handcrafted brews and German food while sitting track-side and taking in some live music. If you’re looking for Oktoberfest fun for the whole family, there’s also Harrisburg’s Oktoberfest Celebration and the Carlisle Barracks Oktoberfest.
- Fall Furnace Fest
Do a little bit of everything at the Fall Furnace Fest. From sampling foods and browsing homemade crafts to making ah scarecrow or touring a mansion, you really can do it all at this festival, which is hosted at the Pine Grove Furnace State Park outside of Carlisle.
- Harvest Fest
Tons of festivals use the word “harvest,” but at Cherry Crest Farm in Lancaster County, they mean it. Pick ears of corn to take home after you’ve made your way out of their five-acre cornfield maze or have taken part in some old-fashioned pumpkin slinging and painting. And if you want to raise the stakes a bit, you can do their maze after dark — just remember to bring a flashlight.
- Midtown Village Fall Festival
Looking to head downtown? Take a day trip to Philadelphia’s Midtown Village Fall Festival for live music and entertainment, as well as a wide selection of vendors. You can also count on plenty of food, from sushi to pub grub and drinks. Get there early, though, because this event attracts more than 50,000 people each year.
- National Apple Harvest Festival
Now entering its 50th year, the National Apple Harvest Festival is all about apples. From pancakes and butter to applesauce, fritters and pies, this festival outside of Gettysburg has everything you need to satisfy your apple craving. And if apples aren’t your favorite treat, the event does have other entertaining activities like chainsaw carving.
- Dillsburg Farmer’s Fair
Missing the summer fairs? The Dillsburg Farmer’s Fair, which is less than a half-hour from Carlisle, gives you the traditional fair experience, but with the cool weather of fall. Fill up on homemade food, like apple dumplings, whoopie pies and dill pickles, while browsing their display of antique cars and tractors. If you’re a pro in the kitchen and have some spare time, you may want to consider entering their cooking contests, too.
